Shillong magnetic observatory started functioning in June 1975 to monitor geomagnetic field variations in the North-East Indian region. This observatory is located in the northern side of the Dauki fault.

Various geophysical instruments such as broadband seismometer, accelerograph, Radon monitor, water level meter, GPS, Induction coil magnetometer, Overhauser magnetometer and fluxgate are also installed under Ministry of Earth Sciences sponsore Multi-Parametric Geophysical Observatory to study seismic and co-seismic activities.

Variation Recordings : IZMIRAN II, Induction coil sensors.
Absolute Measurements : Vector Proton Precession Magnetometer, Declination- Inclination Magnetometer.
